Jonny and I love to have a garden. Mostly it means that I pick out a whole bunch of things I want to grow and Jonny plants what he feels like while I am gone at work.
I wonder if we are the only couple who argues over our garden…
This year I was determined to only plant fruits and veggies that come back every year. This is because we officially decided we will be buying our house next spring (!!!) so now long-term gardening is on my mind.
Growing perennials like strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and rhubarb means that next year I can extend the garden without having to start my original plot from scratch. Smart right?!?
Anyways, I went to work one day and when I got home the garden had be filled up with peppers, peas, beans, tomatoes, zucchini, kale and lettuce mixes. You should note that none of those will return next year. Oh Jonny… lol.
I am not super motivated about weeding my garden. This is only the garden’s 3rd year so we are still battling with a lot of grass and weeds coming through. So this year Jonny layered the garden with newspaper and topped that with straw. This will suffocate the weeds and save us a ridiculous about of time in the garden.
Another benefit to this lazy (and smart) gardening method is that it keeps the moisture in the soil longer. I am also hoping it will prevent ground rot on the veggies that sit against the soil (zucchinis).
Anyways, this is our garden as of noon today (July 1st). And being that it is July 1st I would like to take a moment to say Happy Canada Day to all my fellow Canadians out there!
