I love all kinds of plant based milks. I didn’t start drinking them because I had a lactose or dairy intolerance but because I was curious about all the other milk options out there. I couldn’t believe that the first 25 years of my life I consumed only milk that came from a cow.
I’ve tried it all now! Goat, sheep, almond, rice, soy, coconut, cashew, walnut… am I missing any?
I’ve found that I really prefer the plant based milks over the animal milks. They are easier on my stomach and I just love to variety of flavors and options. Most often I keep almond milk in the house. Its my favorite for adding to my tea and Jonny has it with cereal. What I don’t like about the almond milk I buy is all the additives. Specifically the variety of gums used in them. I don’t know what they are and I don’t like that they’re in there. They also are generally not fodmap safe if you’re a fodmaper.
I experimented with making my own almond milk. Its a process of soaking the almonds in filtered water for the day, draining, adding new water, blending it all up and then straining through a cheesecloth. As a bonus you can use the strained out almond grounds as flour. The downside is that it takes all day and a mess to make milk lol.
Hemp milk takes less than 2 minutes and I love the flavor of fresh hemp milk. It’s nothing like the grassy flavored stuff that comes from the store. It is nutty, creamy and delicious.
So here is my alternative and it made me so happy:
- ¼ cup hemp hearts
- 1 cup water (filtered / brita is best)
- sugar / stevia etc to sweeten
- Put your hemp hearts and water in your blender (I use magic bullet) and blend it all up for 60-90 seconds until everything is well blended
- Store in a jar in the fridge
If you are fodmap sensitive feel free to sweeten with sugar or stevia. If you aren’t then you can sweeten with maple syrup, honey, agave or add a couple dates when blending.
