Honestly I kind of thought I was done with pumpkin for the season. I have been overwhelming you guys with pumpkin recipes. First there was homemade pumpkin puree, then there was super easy pumpkin soup, then chili with pumpkin puree in it and finally pumpkin pie. But this whole time I forgot something very important than you guys need… pumpkin pie SPICE!
Since the pumpkin spice craze hit north america I have always been able to find a variety of pumpkin pie spice mixes at the grocery store and the bulk food store. There was a time before it was so available that I used to make my own. It is super simple and gives you the opportunity to customize it to your preference.
Some people like it spicier and will add more ginger and cloves while others like it a little milder and will favor the cinnamon as the dominant flavor.
After comments in my pumpkin pie recipe asking for more information about pumpkin pie spice I looked through my kitchen journal and found my pumpkin pie spice mixture so you can make some of your own.
Please feel free to play with these measurements. This is the combination I found that I liked the best but I am always playing with the ratios. This should be a starting point for you!
- 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon
- ½ Tbsp ground nutmeg
- ¼ Tbsp ground ginger
- ¼ Tbsp ground cloves or allspice
- Combine all in a jar and mix together
- Use in place of pumpkin pie spice or a combination of spices in pies, muffins, pancakes, smoothies or lattes.
