If you have felt so burnt out or depressed that you can’t even get up the energy to feed yourself then just know you aren’t alone. I have been there! I have felt that struggle. I am currently in a good mindset and have a lot of my energy back but I know how overwhelming it can be.
I know there are different levels to how much energy you will have so I will try to provide options. This is strictly based off my experience.
First off, it is important to get some nutrition in. I found that really helped me to bounce back. I will admit that there were days where I just laid on the couch eating soda crackers. That is okay too! Don’t put pressure on yourself. Do what you can.
Fruit is an easy option because you don’t have to cook it. You can grab it, eat it and move on with life. No dishes! And they provide nutrition. I also find that I really crave high carb foods when I am down and out. These are tasty sweet treats. I have literally been so out of it that I just put the fruit bowl on the table by my couch because getting up to go to the fruit bowl didn’t feel worth the effort.
Banana with peanut butter
Apple with almond butter
Celery with nut butter
Bowl of grapes
Bag of mixed salad greens with dressing – dump it in a bowl and eat it
Toast with nut butter, avocado, chia jam, hummus, or a slice of deli meat and cheese, be creative.
Precooked chicken from the grocery store.
Rice, broth, black beans, canned veg – put them all in the rice cooker and wait for it to cook. Make enough for more than one meal.
Chicken and rice in the rice cooker
Yogurt with fruit and nuts
Smoothies – milk, frozen fruit, greens (I buy an all-in-one green powder that adds a lot of nutrients. I find it really helps me get back on my feet a lot more quickly)
Eggs – fried, scrambled, omelette, boiled etc
Steamer veggie bags – just put in the microwave
Microwave rice bags – to put the steamer veggies on
I would love to know what you would add to this list.
A “down” day of eating for me would look like:
Smoothie – almond milk, banana, greens powder. (sometimes I add other fruit, chia seeds, nut butter etc)
Rice cooker – chicken broth, rice, broccoli, meat if I have it around
Assorted fruit (or maybe an entire sleeve of crackers…lol)
Remember that it isn’t all about meals though! There are other ways to streamline your life. Even though I live in a tiny apartment, I put an ad on kijiji looking for a cleaning lady. I found one at a very good rate. She offered to do the dishes, take out garbage etc as a part of the service as my place was so small and wouldn’t take her long to clean. Many offer laundry services as well. There are a lot of people out there looking for work right now that would be glad to take some of these chores.
Get your groceries delivered. Most cities have some grocery delivery service. It will cost you more but remember this is just a short term situation you are in 🙂
Get takeout – try to get something that will make your mind and body feel good. I like wraps, and burrito bowls.
Call someone who cheers you up.
Take a bath! Even a shower can be too much sometimes. I find having a bath to be very restorative and feels great. Use epsom salts if you have them. Light a candle if you want.
Treat yo self – sheet masks, facials, doing your nails. My sister really enjoys these as they cheer her up and require very little energy.
Read – finally get to that book you’ve been meaning to read. I have kindle and Hoopla for my local library. I enjoy something scandalous and easy to read.
Drinks lots of water. That is always good advice 🙂 I tend to drink my water in the form of unsweetened decaf tea but there are days when boiling the kettle isn’t worth the effort. Those days are for straight-up water.
Watch funny videos on youtube, Tiktok, instagram etc. Sometimes I watch stand-up comedy specials.
Move your body, even just a little bit. I have pretty much mastered stretching and yoga from the couch.
Get outside. Breath the fresh air, listen to the sounds around you. Get some sunshine. Go for a walk around if you feel up to it.
Be kind to yourself <3
Things to do when you AREN’T feeling down
If you are someone who goes through these phases then you can plan ahead for them. I like to keep things on hand for times when I need them. I stock up my freezer with fruits, veggies and easy-to-cook meats.
Put away a little money. It doesn’t have to be much but it can take a lot of stress off if you need to take some time away from work. It might be worth looking into passive income as well so you can make a bit of money while you aren’t working. I may create a post on passive income ideas if anyone is interested.
I really enjoy the Stouffers Fit Bowls and keep a couple of those in the freezer.
I declutter my space so I don’t feel overwhelmed when I am down. Less stuff = less clutter = less cleaning.
Get yourself some comfy clothes to lay around in.
Create a couple playlists for yourself. A happy or sad one depending on what you need. Sometimes you need something to just lay there and cry to. Disney movies can be good for this too! lol. Also a playlist that cheers you up!
Try to sense it before it is coming. Sometimes we have signs that one of these phases is coming. When I feel it I try to get ahead of it. I get my groceries. I clear out my schedule of anything I can. I clean out my inbox. I eat a really nutritious meal.
Please comment if you have any ideas that you would personally add to the list. I would love more ideas and it would benefit the community overall.
Thank you for reading and see you in the next post <3
